8 handy tips to protect against the threat of Ransomware.

Ransomware, ransomware, ransomware. It’s all we seem to hear about at the minute. However, there is a very good reason for it – its big business for hackers,
and its only getting bigger.

As far back as 2013 there were 1.5 million unique samples of Ransomware identified, in 2016, who REALLY knows how many there were. Of all the Malware uncovered
in 2016, 50% of this was Ransomware. There are of course other threats, Mirai, Shamoon and Stonedrill to name a few however Ransomware is definitely
the hackers choice and why, because it makes them money!

Looking ahead to the rest of 2017, Ransomware will become even more of a problem as it becomes more sophisticated in how is delivers its payload and also
becomes more widespread. There have been examples noted of teenagers talking about Ransomware on Minecraft and how easy it is to make money.

Hackers are now selling subscriptions to their latest and greatest Ransomware. On the 17-02-2017 a new exploit kit, called Nebulas, was advertised offering
‘users’ a subscription to the service for a set amount of time. The prices were reasonable, when you consider the potential rewards. The cost of the
service was:

  • 24 hours – $100
  • 7 Days – $600
  • 21 Days – $2000

In our last Whitepaper, A Twist in the Fight Against Ransomware – The Human Firewall,

your network, however there are other things you can do to stave off this threat.
